Popular cross-platform messaging app WhatsApp is on an update spree. After introducing the much-awaited voice calling feature, WhatsApp has now revamped the app for Android with a new design. The latest WhatsApp build (Version 2.12.41) that brings with it a new layout design and fresh icons, among other changes, is currently available only on thecompany's official website.

Users can download the latest APK file from the official site, install it manually and get the redesigned WhatsApp activated on their phone. The new version of the app is yet to make its way the Google Play store.

While some of the design changes are noticeable, others have undergone a subtle change. Here is a list of changes the new version of WhatsApp comes with.

1. The taskbar on top is merged with the Calls, Chats and Contacts tabs with a green-coloured band running in the background. The new version has dropped the old familiar green for a new shade. Also, the taskbar (with WhatsApp and its icon on the left, and the search, compose message icons, and the three vertical dots on the right) collapses as you scroll down, leaving you with more room for viewing content.

2. While the emoji icons remain the same, the tray holding them has a different colour. The new version of WhatsApp has an emoji tray in a light shade of grey. It was earlier in black.

3. The little pointer arrows of the speech bubbles (containing the messages) have been tweaked a bit.

4. Tap on the attachment icon in a chat window, and you will see the list of options - Gallery, Photos, Video, Audio, Location, and Contact - popping up with transition. Also these icons have got a facelift with the black colour in the background changed to grey.

5. The recording button next to the message box now has a green background that highlights its presence. The message box also gets an overhaul.

WhatsApp calling feature for all Android 4.0.0 and above devices, iOS and Blackberry have to wait a fortnight.

Its still not available on Google Play store but WhatsApp calling feature has now been introduced for all Android smartphones running on Android 4.0.0 KitKat and above.

To avail this feature, we have already given you two methods, now here is a third method which does not take any tech savvyness but you have to sideload it onto your Android smartphone device.

As many of our readers of the previous post pointed out, while enabling the WhatsApp calling through the rooted method, though they were successful, when they tried to make a call on the WhatsApp calling, the App gave a beeping sound and crashed. Well the reason for that is that both the caller and the receiving party need to have the same APK installed on their smartphones.

However we now show you the easiest method:

You have to get the latest version from the Whatsapp site. The best way to go about it is to access the site from your mobile (www.whatsapp.com). When you click the download option the Whatsapp site will recognise that you are accessing it from an Android phone and will take you to the download page. When you click on ‘download’, an .apk file will be downloaded (the version you need is 2.11.552 or above).
  • You can also download the .apk file in the computer
  • (http://www.whatsapp.com/android/current/WhatsApp.apk)
  • Now go to your SETTINGS > MORE > SECURITY > ENABLE UNKNOWN SOURCES
  • There is no need to uninstall or delete your old WhatsApp.
  • Go to the FILE MANAGER > DOWNLOAD > WhatsApp.Apk (the place where your downloads are saved), tap the APK and it will be installed.
Now for the hard part, what is more difficult is that you need a WhatsApp user who already has the calling feature activated. You have to request such person (You may post request on WhatsApp group/Facebook  Friends/Twitter DMs to tell them to call you on WhatsApp.

Once you catch hold of such a users, ask him/her to call you, when you receive a WhatsApp call, dont receive it, instead RESTART YOUR WHATSAPP. Once you have restarted the App you will see three tabs on the top of the WhatsApp dashboard, namely Calls, Chats and Contacts. Now you make a call to that same user who called you to confirm your WhatsApp Calling is working.

Done! Congratulations, you can start making Whatsapp calls to those who have this feature enabled.
PS You can also help others who dont have this feature enabled by making a call to them.
